How to compare boiler installation quotes properly

When people compare boiler installation quotes, it is easy to focus on the boiler model and the price. But that does not tell you whether you are getting a good installation or good value for money.

A boiler installation quote can look cheaper or more expensive for lots of reasons, and the difference is not always about the boiler itself. The controls, system condition, pipework, system protection, commissioning and final setup all affect the standard of the finished job.

Most importantly, a boiler installation should be seen as an opportunity to improve the whole heating system, not just replace the boiler. That can mean better controls, better system protection, better setup, cleaner system water and a more efficient overall result.

When comparing boiler installation quotes, the main things to look for are:

  • are you actually being quoted the same boiler, and if not, why has that boiler been recommended and what warranty comes with it?

  • what controls are being included, and do they improve how the system runs, for example through load or weather compensation?

  • what is being allowed for to clean and protect the system, including flushing, water treatment, a filter and air separation?

  • what type of flush will actually be carried out, and has the installer explained it clearly rather than just writing “system flush” on the quote?

  • has the installer explained how the job will improve the overall heating system, not just replace the boiler?

  • are you comparing the overall standard of the job, not just the bottom-line price?

That is why two quotes for the same property can vary so much, even if both include a new boiler.

At Lombardi Heating, we believe a boiler installation should be safe, reliable, efficient and properly thought through from the start. That is why boiler quotes need to be compared on more than just the appliance and the bottom-line figure.

High quality boiler installation with neat pipework, controls and system protection

The boiler is only part of the quote

A good boiler matters, but a high quality installation should improve more than just the appliance itself. In many cases, a new boiler installation is the best opportunity to improve the wider heating system as well, including controls, water quality, system protection and overall setup.

When comparing quotes, it is worth looking at:

  • the controls included

  • the condition of the existing system

  • the pipework and overall layout

  • system protection

  • the commissioning process

  • and how well the boiler will be set up once installed

A boiler installation done properly should work well not just on day one, but over the long term too.

Correct sizing and system design matter

A new boiler should be suited to the property and the heating demand. Bigger is not automatically better.

With combi boilers, output is often driven more by hot water demand than heating demand. The heating requirement of an average home can be much lower than people expect, but a combi still needs enough output to provide hot water at a practical flow rate.

That is why combi boiler sizing can be misunderstood. A boiler may need higher output for hot water, but that does not mean bigger is better for the heating system. If a boiler is oversized and cannot modulate low enough, it can become less efficient during normal heating operation because the heating demand for much of the year is relatively low.

Where wider heating work is involved, radiator sizing and flow temperatures matter as well. Correctly sized radiators and better system setup can help a heating system run more effectively at lower flow temperatures.

This is one of the reasons boiler installation quotes can vary so much from one installer to another.

Controls make a real difference

Controls are often treated as an afterthought, but they have a big effect on how a heating system performs.

When comparing boiler quotes, it is worth checking what controls are included, how the heating will be managed, and whether improvements such as weather compensation and load compensation are being allowed for.

A new boiler can only perform as well as the wider system and setup allow.

System protection should not be overlooked

System protection is another area where installation quotes can differ a lot.

At Lombardi Heating, we place a lot of importance on doing the surrounding details properly. Depending on the job, that can include:

  • system filters

  • air separation

  • flush points

  • water shock arrestors

  • and making sure the system is properly cleaned, protected and left in good condition

These things may not be the headline item on a quote, but they make a real difference to long-term reliability and performance.

Cleaning and water quality matter more than many customers realise

One of the easiest ways for boiler installation quotes to look similar on paper is for both to mention a system flush, without explaining what that really means.

This is an important part of the job, and a couple of words on a quote is not enough.

Customers should understand what type of flush is being carried out, how the system will actually be cleaned, what is being done to protect water quality afterwards, and what components are being fitted to help keep the system clean over time.

Commissioning and setup should never be rushed

Installing the boiler is only part of the job. Proper commissioning and final setup are just as important.

That means making sure the boiler is set up correctly, the controls are working as they should, and the system is operating properly before the job is signed off.

A rushed installation may still heat the house, but that does not mean it has been done to a high standard.

A more basic boiler installed properly will often outperform a better boiler installed poorly. Ideally, you want both: a good boiler and a high quality installation. But even a good boiler can be undermined by bad setup, weak system protection or rushed workmanship.

Why the cheapest quote is not always the best value

Boiler quotes can vary a lot. Sometimes that is because one installer is simply cheaper. But often it is because the scope and standard of the job are different.

If one quote allows for better controls, stronger system protection, more careful setup and better workmanship, it may offer far better long-term value even if the upfront cost is higher.

If one installer is only swapping the boiler and another is using the job as an opportunity to improve efficiency, controls, water quality and overall setup, those are not equal quotes.

That is why comparing boiler quotes on boiler model alone can be misleading.

What we focus on at Lombardi Heating

At Lombardi Heating, our aim is to carry out boiler installations properly.

That means focusing on:

  • the right boiler for the job

  • good controls

  • system protection

  • careful workmanship

  • proper commissioning

  • and a finished result that is reliable, efficient and built for long-term performance

We do not see a boiler installation as just putting a new boiler on the wall. We see it as an opportunity to improve the wider heating system wherever the job allows.

We are not trying to be the cheapest option. We are trying to offer the best value by doing the work to a higher standard.
